Big Trends

2016 ended with a big crochet trend. The bun beanie. I woke up one morning and it was everywhere! It took me a couple weeks to get as excited as everyone else about this trend, but I came around, tried a few designs, and settled on adapting a standard beanie that was already in the works.

I'm really excited about this hat! It's got great big ridges, and a great fit. It stretches without stretching out, and stays put while playing in the snow. I've tested this hat in both Lion Brand Hometown USA, and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick. Both work wonderfully, but my personal preference was the Thick and Quick. Any super bulky (6) yarn would work great. Go with what you love! Enjoy, Lisa

Big Ridge Bun Beanie

Big Ridge Bun Beanie

Materials Used: Lion Brand Hometown USA Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yardage: 81-85 (5 oz) Uses just one skein of yarn! 10.00mm Crochet hook Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Stitches Used: CH: Chain SC: Single Crochet HDC: Half Double Crochet SS: Slip Stitch BLO: working in Back Loop Only FLO: working in Front Loop Only

Notes: -The hat is worked in rows, joined after last row, and then turned to work the crown. -The finished measurement before joining the seams may seem small, but the hat stretches quite a bit because of the ribbing. - To have a looser fit at the crown of the hat, skip the last step of including the hair tie. - To have a tighter fit at the crown of the hat, work a hair tie into the crown.

Gauge: 9 STS and 6 Rows = 4”

End Measurements: Hat is “one size fits most” Hat should fit up to head circumference of 22”. Length should be 15” at end of row 29 without stretching the hat at the ridges. Crown to brim: 8”

Instructions: CH 18

Row 1: Working in the back bump of the chain, SS in 2nd CH from hook, SS in next 2 CH spaces, HDC in next 10 CH spaces, SC in next 4 CH spaces. (17) Turn

Row 2: CH 1, in BLO (work BLO here, and in every row throughout), SC in next 4 STS, HDC in next 10 STS, SS in next 3 STS. Turn

Row 3: CH1, SS in next 3 STS, HDC in next 10 STS, SC in next 4 STS. Turn

Row 4-29: Repeat rows 2&3

At end of row 29, turn, and CH1. Bring up row 1 to meet row 29, so that row 29 is on top and facing you. In FLO of Row 29, and BLO of Row 1 SS in each ST across. If not adding a hair tie, move directly onto next step. (Hat Crown) Hat Crown: Turn hat so that the crown is on top. CH 1, work 1 SC in spaces between the “ridges” to create the hat crown. Join with beginning SC, fasten off and weave in ends. (15)

To add a hair tie, work as instructed for hat crown, but hold a hair tie close to the working round, and carry it along while working the SC’s around it. Download your free pattern here: http://shescraftycrochet.wixsite.com/lisapower/free-patterns
